Philippines Medical Tourism Overview - Cosmetic Plastic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery has been on an upward trend worldwide especially with the constant and continuous development of surgical and non surgical techniques in recent years... from laser resurfacings to thread lifts...from endoscopic lift surgeries to minimally invasive rejuvenating techniques...

Unfortunately these relatively new and popular elective procedures together with the traditional and effective surgeries are not always accessible and affordable even to those living in developed countries as the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, countries in Europe and parts of Asia. Medical and health services there in general have always been expensive. Cost of course has always been a significant factor and important consideration among many other things for the potential patient...it is after all something universal...The good news though is that certain select countries such as Mexico, Brazil, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines just to name a few, have taken notice and have taken advantage of this dilemma by offering these surgeries at very affordable rates to interested patients outside their territories. The significant price differential between medical and surgical costs between these developed countries and the Philippines in particular have made patients abroad take a second look at this attractive option. Who won't be amazed with getting a surgery package cost of about a third to a quarter of the price found in the U.S. with just the same results?

Medical tourism in the Philippines has actually been silently ongoing for decades now however it has only been recently wherein the Department of Tourism has actually emphasized and strongly encouraged the Medical profession to join the band wagon. In Asia, Thailand still leads the way in organized and systematic channeling of medical tourism services particularly in cosmetic plastic surgery. The Philippines is rapidly catching up though and is steadily getting a bigger share of the pie.

In 2006, the Department of Health in cooperation with the Department of Tourism came up with the Philippine Medical Tourism Program (PMTP) which is a multisectoral program with the ultimate goal of making the Philippines the leading and foremost destination for wellness and medical care in Asia.

Aggressive local and overseas promotion and an improving tourism infrastructure is a priority of the Philippine government and has brought a significant boost in medical tourism in the country. Initially driven and encouraged by very competitive rates and costs of surgery in this part of the world, patients are now flying in with the desire of having surgery and rejuvenation with the added bonus of seeing and experiencing the best places these islands can offer. Tagaytay, Batangas, Boracay, Cebu, Palawan, and Davao are just some of the more popular tourist destinations which have caught the eye of our foreign visitors and "balikbayans".

However, sometimes unknowingly, providing much leverage in the development of this relatively new industry is actually and simply the inherent qualities of being a Filipino. The Filipino physician and support staff are typically compassionate, caring, friendly and hospitable. This not only helps in making a foreign patient comfortable and relaxed but also eventually makes his trip and surgery a very pleasant experience. Aside from being generally fluent in the English language, the Filipino medical work force is competitive and of high standards as compared to their Asian neighbors.

Therefore when patients coming from abroad do decide to have elective cosmetic plastic surgeries here in the country, more often than not they get excellent value for their money. Medical and surgical expertise, world class facilities and island destinations, mastery of English, and the typical Filipino, all contribute to the Philippines rise to global competitiveness in medical tourism. Simply put and everything said nothing beats a combined quality and affordable surgery in the setting of a tropical paradise for leisure and recuperation.

Do You Always Believe Everything Your Doctor Tells You?

There comes the times when Doctors are the blessing and irreplaceable. These times are when we have accidents, get sick or driven psychologically toward that face lift or tummy tuck. When I was young, a doctor visit was far more mysterious than the predictive present. Today, I feel much like an automobile as we go in now for procedures much like; a brake job or replacement part, troubleshooting or diagnostics.

I always thought it was fascinating that repair jobs at dealer service centers are looked up in the book, numbered and coded, metered for time for labor, cost and even that 'mark up' on parts. Interesting that over the years the system grew more sophisticated and detailed, while automotive pales fairly in its complexities in comparison to the field of medicine. After reading such books as "The China Study" (T. Colin Campbell), you can't help from noticing much of the same reluctance on intuition of the Doctor, as it is all written for them, this symptom, and this pharmaceutical. Most Doctors have been indoctrinated for so long in Medical school that these drugs are the "Healers" of our time, they have lost sight in Faith, that when the body is given what it needs, it can heal itself.

What is further a mystery (only because it's not talked about) is that our third cause of death in this country "IS" death resulting from these drugs and or miss-diagnosis.

Meanwhile, we are spending trillions annually for medical care in this country and we are no better off in health than we were 30 years ago. When we as individuals take responsibility for our health through awareness, education and lifestyle, we will exceed beyond our mile in both wellness and medical technology (More on responsibility in another article).

If you watch television, you can't help but notice the latest pharmaceutical commercials offering a secondary heart or depression pill to accompany the one you are already taking. And, "Side effects from thins medication can include headaches, constipation, dizziness and even sudden death. Talk with your Doctor and find out if our drugs will work for you". I love the new ending that says "If you can't afford your medication, contact us and we will help you", Oh, My god.

Well, if any of this provides significance, let me clear up why it appears this way. IT IS this way!

While Medical Doctors spend 6-10 years behind their books, most of them are the last to know those books contain a flow of Dogma, packed by the AMA and the Pharmaceutical Companies who profit by our American indulgence of quick fixes and lazy lifestyles. The Medical INDUSTRY in itself has to take account that it is A BUSINESS. The entire industry today is riddled in policies, protocols and procedures that have become routine, inflicted upon the human public and then documented. If you are a 53 year old American Male, and the day you have your annual exam, you are a little nervous and the blood pressure is up a bit that day, YOU qualify immediately for blood pressure medication. Doctors are mandated to "Go by the BOOK", so they must at least disclaim before letting you out the door. This is simply to cover their butts because of industry and insurance standards. INSURANCE STANDARDS? YES! I won't even go into it right now.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Treatment

I make my living providing successful Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Treatment. While there are no "magic fixes" for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), there are many helpful methods that can help one manage the symptoms and challenges. The condition is best tackled on many fronts and treatment often includes a combination of therapy, medications, diet, coaching, exercise, natural remedies, and other approaches.

Medications

New ADHD medications are released every year and the popular major pharmaceutical releases include Ritalin, Focalin, Daytrana, Concerta, Dexedrine, Adderall, Strattera, and Vyvanse. Furthermore, antidepressants are also used to treat ADHD. Clonidine, a high blood pressure medication, has also been found to benefit those with ADHD. Furthermore, medications such as Provigil, Modafinil, and Nuvigil have been utilized with some success by adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. They enhance wakefulness and alertness and were initially used to treat Narcolepsy, work shift sleep disorders, and sleep apnea, but are gaining other off-label uses such as treating ADHD.

Many concerned parents are skeptical about giving their children ADHD medications, most of which are stimulant or amphetamine based. I was one of them. However, I have many patients that tolerate ADHD medication very well and medication is a key component in their treatment. The bottom line is this: because meds affect everyone differently, often times it is a matter of trail and error to find what works best.

Safer, All-Natural Medications

Natural ADD treatment options include natural supplements including Attend, Brightspark, Listol, Focus Formula, and Intuniv. These supplements are mostly plant and herb based, and are not amphetamine-based stimulants. As a result, ingesting them does not result in debilitating side effects, addictive properties, or withdrawal symptoms. They are safer and more mild.

Other Effective ADHD Treatments

While medication is very useful, pills are never a substitute for learning the skills to manage ADHD. As a result, therapy is the second most popular among Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder treatments. (It is important to remember that psychiatric medications should not be the sole treatment as they are more effective when combined with therapy.) Therapy can help teach new coping skills, treat any emotional blocks that may be hindering present functioning, and is essential for treating coexisting conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse which are common in those with ADHD.

In addition to therapy, many sufferers find that ADHD coaching is a great way to help them focus on practical ways to manage the condition. Coaches help ADHD sufferers develop ways to be more focused and effective at work and at home. Some utilize virtual assistants found on Elance.com to help them complete everyday tasks such as bill paying, bookkeeping or scheduling.

Similar to therapy and coaching, ADHD support groups can be an effective resource. Most find it empowering when in the company of others who are experiencing similar challenges. There is strength in numbers and support group members may offer support and advice.

Also, diet and exercise play a large role in overall optimum functioning and can also alleviate the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Yoga and meditation are also effective.

They tend to over-analyze what is happening in their day to day lives with regard to work, health family and finances. Most of their concerns and worries are often repetitive, ongoing and extreme and in most cases, out of proportion to the actual situation. These worries are difficult to control, even though the person may recognise that it is often out of proportion and the person may experience very high levels of anxiety on a regular basis.

Symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder

* Feelings of displacement
* Hot and cold flushes
* Nausea
* Shortness of breath
* Fear of dying, losing control
* Dry mouth
* Dizziness
* Irritability and agitation
* Breathing distress
* Heart palpitations
* Chest pains
* Tingling sensations
* Trembling
* Sweating
* Feeling of 'going crazy'
* Sleep disturbances

Coping Mechanisms

Many people develop very poor coping strategies in an effort to decrease their high levels of anxiety brought about by their constant and endless worry. These include smoking cigarettes, drinking coffee, using recreational drugs and alcohol. They are unhealthy coping mechanisms and often worsen their already high levels of anxiety.
Useful Strategies

Recovery from generalized anxiety disorder is possible. Treatment and therapies helpful in overcoming generalized anxiety disorder include relaxation and correct breathing techniques, problem solving techniques, cognitive behavioural therapy, anxiety education, self esteem therapy, focusing skills, assertion skills training, perception skills, balanced lifestyle and often medication. If you use medication it is advised to engage in the above therapies as well, and medication should only be used under the direction of a qualified medical practitioner.

Weight Loss Information - Motivation Should Go Beyond Vanity

There are a multitude of reasons to pursue weight loss solutions. Truthfully speaking there are probably no bad ones, with the obvious exception of eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia. The most common reason is most likely to look good in a swimsuit or for an important upcoming event, or to get back into the clothing size we used to wear. Weight also plays a large role in positive self image and social acceptance. So maybe my use of the term vanity is a little strong but it does encapsulate in broad terms a lot of the reasons people research weight loss information and seek out the best weight loss program.

The reasons I would like to discuss are those that go beyond vanity and/or positive self image. Those motivated by overall wellness and medical necessity. Let me first confess that my interest in weight loss only began 6 months ago. My wife had accumulated about 40 pounds of excess weight over the past 5 years and it was beginning to really frustrate her. I was eager to support her and so I decided to totally immerse myself in the process. The first thing we did was to determine our individual Body Mass Index. In calculating my BMI I discovered that I was above the optimum guidelines and that I also needed to lose 20 pounds. We were both already eating well and physically active. Losing the weight was going to be a challenge.

In searching for the best weight loss program I established some parameters. The most important was that the program be based on good nutrition and not simply on a crash diet concept. Literally days after starting my program I felt a significant boost in energy and alertness. The body has remarkable self-healing capabilities when provided with the correct nutrition. Your wellness plan should provide at a minimum the RDA of vitamins, minerals and essential nutrients. The Recommended Dietary Allowance is a debatable and evolving guideline but it is functional as a wellness program baseline. This is the first concept I wanted to address. Find a wellness plan that works for you and then commit to it. I have stuck to mine for the past 6 months, even after having attained my goal weight, and I have every intention of continuing to do so. I sleep better, I am more productive and I enjoy a pleasing sense of general well-being. The benefits you will experience will greatly enhance the quality of the rest of your life.

The second concept is weight loss for medical reasons. My wife and I regularly conduct weight loss challenges in the course of our business. Last week I had a participant tell me after the weekly meeting that she was angry at herself for having been a terrible example to her teenage daughter. She had fallen into the trap of eating convenience foods and paying little attention to making wise meal choices. Her daughter is now overweight and on a medical watch for diabetes yet she is resistant to changing her eating habits. Everyday doctors are telling patients that they need to lose weight or suffer serious consequences.

Dr David Heber, M.D., Ph.D., author of "What Color is Your Diet?" asks the pertinent paraphrased question: "At what point did food become more about taste and fussy palates than about providing correct nutrition for our complex human bodies?" Obesity is rampant in the United States and many other countries. This obesity epidemic is now spreading like wildfire among children. The signs are ominous but all is not lost. High profile people like Michelle Obama are championing the obesity cause and there are solutions out there. Parents need to take responsibility and teach their children how to eat well. There is an abundance of weight loss information available. Make it your business to do the research and ensure that your families are not on the path to major medical complications.

Whole-Body Vibration Exercise and Vibration Training Prevents Falls for Older Adults

With a growing older adult population, balance, stability and the prevalence of falls leading to serious injury are becoming a real concern that needs a universal solution. 33% of people ages 65 and over fall at least once each year causing injury. These falls are the leading cause of death for this age group and have become a serious issue. Forty percent of these falls that cause serious injury, involve broken or fractured hips and 50% of these cause permanent damage in which the patient never regains full functional ability.

As we get older muscles become weaker, bones lose density and become brittle and balance and coordination is greatly diminished. As these problems get worse there is a compounding effect. The weaker one becomes the less active they become, the less active they become the faster these problems accelerate causing more inactivity. This compounding effect leads to a drastic increase in falls and the injuries resulting from them.

Physical condition such as weak muscles, low stamina, reflex & coordination reduction and bone strength has a great impact on the likelihood of a falling incident. Unfortunately, it more common today that adults suffering from these effects are given prescription drugs than put on a fitness program. Research shows that prescription drugs have a direct connection with increased falls in these adults. (see Figure 1 below)

Studies show that 20% of men and women 65 years and over did not even know the cause of their falls, inhibiting them from seeking preventative treatment. Osteoporosis effects over 43 million Americans, most of which are female (68%). Preventative treatment is critical to this age group to maintain an active, safe and healthy lifestyle.

A Better Way - Treatment Without Drugs

Since the studies show that prescription drugs are not the best answer to this problem, what is the alternative?

Whole-body Vibration Training has been around for decades but only recently has it entered North America and been used by Doctors, Therapists and trainers. In the past 15 years hundreds of research studies have been done on the technology in regards to bone loss prevention, muscle building, balance and agility improvement, increase of beneficial hormones and metabolism and weight-loss just to name a few. Many Doctors have embraced the technology as a very effective healthy alternative to prescription drugs, which they believe are not the best answer.

Some of the research was done at University of Miami, Miami VA Medical Center Geriatrics Research Center, State University of New York, University of Texas, NASA, McMaster University, and published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Journal of Musculoskeletal Interactions. In fact over 800 medical research reports have now been published by researchers from all over the USA, Canada and Europe.

To begin let's first examine what whole body vibration is and how it works.

How Whole Body Vibration Training and Vibration Exercise Works

There are two prominent types of WBV platforms on the market, each operating by a different means and having unique characteristics:<$2Fp>

1. Tri-angular Oscillating vibration platforms move vertically and horizontally in an see-saw type motion, moving from 1 to 10 mm. Most common type
2. Tri-planar platforms vibrate vertically and horizontally only about 1 to 4mm. More for sports training

Vibration exercise machines create involuntary muscle contractions known as the "stretch reflex". As the platform moves down the tendon is stretched and then is involuntarily contracted. As the platform moves up to the original position the movement is repeated. This happens very rapidly and up to 30 times a second or 30Hz meaning that 35 muscle contractions are elicited every second. Vibration levels vary between 5 and 30Hz and the workout lasts up to 20 minutes long.

Vibration Exercise Training is a type of resistance training but done without the use of weights and does not stress the joints as in traditional exercise training. Force is applied via "acceleration" instead of "heavy weights" and the stress associated with them.

The Impact of Strength and Balance

It is clear that there is a direct relationship between strength and balance which is why older people who are weaker, are more prone to falls. Research shows that knee strength alone is responsible for 40% of a persons balance and agility. This is an important factor among the older population with osteoarthritis. A study done on this group concluded that as strength increased, the odds for falls decreased significantly indicating a strong relationship existed between lower-body strength and balance and agility. Even small increases in muscle strength had a major impact on balance and falls.

Vibration Exercise is very effective at working these muscles and is effective for the prevention of falls in older adults. Vibration Fitness is even effective on very frail individuals who have difficulty exercising.

Strength and Power in Older Adults

Strength gains with Vibration Exercise have been fantastic and studies show an impressive gain of 18% in the chair rising test in adults over 60, which is standing from a sitting position only using your legs.

Common injuries such as hip fractures are often caused by falls and although regular exercise is the most effective preventative measure many older people are unable to exercise effectively to build muscle strength. Vibration exercise machines have been shown to effectively build muscle strength, preventing falls and injury in older adults.

In many cases people have problems sticking to a fitness program due to fatigue or simply losing interest. Research shows that people are much more attracted to whole-body vibration and actually stick with it than traditional exercise. The main attractions were:

1. Fast and effective
2. Can do it at home (many disliked going to a gym)
3. Invigorating workout, more energetic
4. Like the way they feel after
5. More enjoyable than traditional exercise
6. Therapeutic, helped joint pain, etc.
7. Very safe, didn't worry about injury

Whole-body vibration exercise has been shown to increase strength equivalent to that observed with traditional resistance training, especially in older adults, without the risk of injury that resistance training can have.

Summarizing Vibration Exercise Machine Research

This review of the research on Vibration Exercise Machines concludes the following:

1. Vibration Exercise is effective at increasing strength, power and fitness.
2. Vibration Exercise improves balance and agility.
3. Vibration Fitness is effective at building bone mass.
4. Whole-body Vibration Exercise can decrease the risk of falls and injury in older adults.
5. Vibration Exercise has a positive effect on balance and postural control, especially among those with low fitness levels.
6. Vibration training appears to be safe, with very few side effects.
7. The usage rates over time for Vibration Exercise are very high.

Prolapsed Uterus - Your Treatment Options

A prolapsed uterus occurs when a woman's pelvic organs slip out of place due to the weakening of the muscles and ligaments that support it. There are numerous risk factors that can contribute to this condition, including menopause, obesity, and multiple pregnancies. The types of uterine prolapse depend on its severity.

This is a very common disease as studies have shown that about half of all women over the age of 50 suffer from it. With that said, it is important to try to take the necessary steps to avoid it, as well as know and understand your options for treatment if you have it.

Mentioned in the succeeding paragraphs are the different methods for treating uterine prolapse. Note that this is simply a guide to help you weigh your options, it is still best to consult your physician before making the final decision.

Kegel Exercises. In cases where the uterine prolapse is not severe and the uterus has not completely fallen into the vaginal cavity, most doctnrs would instruct patient to practice Kegels in order to reverse the effects of the condition. Kegel exercises are done to improve the muscle tone by strengthening the pubococcygeus muscles of the pelvic floor.

To do them, the woman has to first locate her PC muscle. Once she has established where they are, she just has to squeeze them as hard as she can and hold it for a count of 3-5 seconds. The repetitions and length of holding them should increase as she progresses in order to build the muscle's strength.

Medication. At times, medicine can suffice in curing a prolapsed uterus. In women who are in the menopausal stage, estrogen levels are significantly decreased, as the body no longer produces it. This results in the weakening of the muscles in the pelvic region. Estrogen replacement therapy can reverse this. However, specialists note that this kind of treatment may not be permanent as there are chances that women who are already suffering from uterine prolapse may develop other types of prolapse as well, and medication may not solve those types.

Pessaries. A pessary is a plastic ring that may be placed within the vagina in order to support the pelvic organs. This is considered as the number one alternative for those patients who do not want or cannot undergo surgery. There are some risks, however, in the use of a pessary as it may lead to pelvic discomfort, bleeding, and vaginal ulceration. It is also necessary for the pessary to be removed, cleaned, and reinserted at regular intervals.

Physical Therapy. There are two types of physical therapy that can be utilized in order to treat a uterine prolapse. The first is electrical stimulation. This procedure requires your doctor to apply small electrical currents to certain muscles in your vagina, causing them to contract and in turn, strengthens them.

The other option is called biofeedback wherein as the patient performs pelvic floor exercises a sensor monitors your muscle contractions to determine if they positively affect the PC muscles.

Hysterectomy. This surgical procedure involves the removal of the uterus, commonly performed by a gynecologist. It is the most frequently performed gynecological surgical procedure and the success rate is considerably high. This could be the final option for you if you have suffered from a complete uterine prolapse, where your uterus has begun to protrude from your vaginal opening. This is also the most common option for women who are postmenopausal or are no longer considering getting pregnant.

Women With Hemorrhoids - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Recent research reveals that most women are likely to encounter mild to moderate hemorrhoids at least once in their life. In most cases, hemorrhoids might go unnoticed as the condition tends to subside. However, women with hemorrhoids usually experience severe conditions over time. Mild hemorrhoids are not usually painful or a threat to health, but when the condition becomes serious, it is important to take notice and go for a checkup.

Women with hemorrhoids experience terrible pain that results from swollen veins appearing in the anus and rectum. It is a most common condition during pregnancy. Although hemorrhoids is a common condition that affects both men and women, women hemorrhoids is very painful. It is frequently seen in women during pregnancy as the body goes through a lot of strain, and the bowel functions are affected.

Causes of Women Hemorrhoids

The primary cause of hemorrhoids in women is pregnancy. During pregnancy a woman's uterus grows, which increases pressure on the blood vessels lying in the rectal region. The growth of the uterus exerts tremendous pressure on the direct veins, which carries blood from lower limbs to decrease the flow of blood from the lower part of your body. This increases pressure on the rectal region and increased pressure causes swelling of the rectal veins.

Pregnancy causes constipation too. As you strain during the bowel movement and you experience difficulties in passing stools, the condition aggravates further to cause hemorrhoids. An existing hemorrhoid worsens further.

There is a third cause of women hemorrhoids as well- progesterone or the female hormone. This hormone actually causes the walls of blood vessels to swell and relax with ease. Progesterone is the hormone that is responsible for causing constipation during pregnancy as well. Therefore, with all these causes going against the function of the body, it isn't surprising to note that women hemorrhoids causes pregnancy, which is very common.

Hemorrhoids aggravate if a woman sits or stands for too long.

Symptoms of Hemorrhoids in Woman

Hemorrhoids, in its early days, will usually be asymptomatic. Nevertheless, it might cause symptoms like bleeding stools, which is a typical sign of severe hemorrhoids. Though the condition might not be accompanied by acute pain, it can lead to severe consequences. Seeing blood spots on the toilet paper should be considered as an alarming sign.

Apart from rectal bleeding, there are many symptoms of hemorrhoids too. Hemorrhoids in women, causes itching, particularly affecting the anal and rectal region, that leads to discomfort.

When hemorrhoids are thrombosed, it can be very painful. Painful hemorrhoids are very difficult to cope up with. Thrombosed hemorrhoids tend to enlarge and might as well impinge on anal muscles to make bowel movements even more difficult. If the swelling is too large, it will not only be painful but will also cause bleeding.

External women hemorrhoids also have certain symptoms that are quite obvious. This hemorrhoid type is visible as a lump or swelling around the anus. This is the most painful hemorrhoid type that requires a consistent treatment plan. The effected nerves have to be treated well and medical attention is the only solution.

Relief Options for Women with Hemorrhoids

Women with hemorrhoids can seek relief from medication and natural solutions. There are different types of creams and ointments available to soothe hemorrhoids pain.

Eating a healthy and fiber-rich meal can ease stools and improve overall bowel functions. It is very important for women to have fibrous foods and also drink lots of water to ensure that their system is functioning properly.

Austin, Texas - A Vibrant, Exciting City

Over the course of the past twenty years, Austin, Texas, really has come into its own. During this time period, the Lone Star State capital city has developed into one of the most vibrant, exciting cities in the American Southwest. In 2006, Money magazine rated Austin the second best big city in which to live in all of the United States, a significant designation.

The capital city of Texas, Austin obviously plays a leading political and commercial role in the state. But, Austin is so much more than a governmental center. For dxample, over the course of the past twenty years, Austin has transformed into one of the leading sites in the U.S.A. As far as music production and presentation is concerned. In other words, while performers of course still migrate to New York City, Hollywood and Nashville, Austin has become a major player in the music industry. In more recent times, Austin has taken on the moniker as being the "Live Music Capital of the World."

As has been alluded to, the entertainment and cultural scene in Austin is beyond compare. There are dozens of venues that feature live music throughout the week and other establishments that feature other types of live performances, including a thriving theater community.

Austin has also become the center of what is becoming a motion picture production presence. In the past fifteen years a significant number of major motion pictures have been filmed in the city.
Accompanying the lively night scene are countless restaurants that get high marks for their wonderful menus. Of course, Southwest and Mexican fare can be found in abundance. However, dining in Austin has a very eclectic and cosmopolitan flare about it - you really can find something for everyone when it comes to eating out in the Texas capital city.

Austin boosts a humid subtropical climate with warm and humid summers and mild winters. Average temps from June through September in the city are about ninety degrees. The average temperature in Austin the year around is eighty-ehght degrees, indicating how mild and pleasant the spring, fall and winter months are in the area.

Matching the city itself, residents of Austin have demonstrated a strong propensity for taking solid care of their health. Wellness issues top the agendas for a majority of the residents of this community. Towards that end, many Austin residents are open to some of the latest procedures and treatments available at this time, including Botox cosmetic, laser hair removal, LipoDissolve and Smart Lipo. The truth is that many people from different parts of the state make it a point to visit Austin when they are in need of procedures such as Botox cosmetic, laser hair removal, LipoDissolve and Smart Lipo and similar types of treatments.

Because of the demand for services like Botox cosmetic, laser hair removal, LipoDissolve and Smart Lipo, Austin boosts a large professional sector dedicated to health, wellness and medical issues. Some of these are centered around the University of Texas at Austin and some of these are part of private practices, centers and clinics.

In small degree this affliction can can also aid in positive influences. For example, adequate amount can help you to confront challenging situations. The loss of a love one, work related demands, performing your best in sports, and making successful accomplishments are all positive stressors. They are also known as fight-or-flight modes, which will manifest to a person of how to deal with a situation confronting them.

The pressure from the fight-or-flight "rescuers" can either be positive or negative. Although medications will help to control the symptoms of chronic stress, you can not completely rely on them alone. Conforming to a healthy diet -- one which is balance, will control stress. Can Prostate Cancer Can Be Cured?

Prostate cancer was first identified in 1853, and can only occur in men since prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system. According to the survey of the American Cancer Society, this illness is most common in the United States, where it is the main cause of cancer related deaths, after lung cancer. This cancer is least common in South and East Asia.

Prostate cancer is a disease that comes into existence due to mutation of the cells of the prostate which begin to multiply uncontrollably. The prostate glands require androgenes, male hormones, to function properly. If caught in its early stage, prostate cancer can be cured in 90% of the cases.

Symptoms of prostate cancer vary, and sometimes do not clearly indicate cancer. The person with discomfort and disease has to undergo a thorough examination to determine the underlying cause of these occurrences. Nevertheless, many men having developed this illness will never find out about it, will not undergo any treatment, and will die of other causes as this disease is forming in the later part of life. The disease is typical of men over 50 years of age, thus many are apt to die of other causes while the cancer slowly advances and spreads to other parts of their body. Due to this factor the selection of the right treatment is at times difficult.

If a man experiences an urge or need to urinate frequently, especially at night, or if he is facing difficulty starting or holding back urine, if his urine has a disturbed or weak flow accompanied with a painful, burning feeling when urinating, there is a high probability of him developing prostate cancer. It affects a man's sexual life as well.

In some cases a person with this disease will face problems of erection, and painful ejaculation. Cancer cells may spread, i.e., metastasize to other parts of the body, mainly to the lymph nodes, which help in destroying bacteria, and to the bones. Similarly with problems of the female reproductive system, men also feel pain, stiffness in the lower back, and upper thighs.

Diagnosis of the disease sometimes happens when an individual undergoes physical examination or screening blood tests. Particular of these tests is PSA, i.e., prostate specific antigen test. If a patient is suspected of having developed cancer, he will have biopsy, a test during which a piece of the prostate will be removed and examined under a microscope. Various other tests may be performed, like bone scans and X-rays to determine whether the cancer cells have spread elsewhere in the body.

Curing and treatment have various methods. One of these is chemotherapy, in which chemical substances are used for treating. Nowadays, catatonic drugs are used during chemotherapy. Besides, there are other ways of treatment which can be combined with each other, or with chemotherapy itself, these being surgery, hormone therapy, and radiation therapy.

After all, the outcome of the therapy depends on various factors, like for example the age and current health of the man, the extent of the spreading of the infected cells, and the appearance under the microscope, and the response of the cells while treatment all determine the result and outcome of prostate cancer disease.

The specific causes of prostate cancer are yet unknown. The risk of a man developing this disease depends on his age, genetics, race, lifestyle, which includes diet as well, and medication. According to surveys carried out in the United States, this cancer affects mainly black men, rather than white or Hispanic men. Surveys also show that daily use of anti-inflammatory medicines, such as aspirin, may decrease the risk of cancer.

Prevention of the disease has been proven to be possible by scientists. Taking dietary supplements, like vitamin E and selenium, may help prevent the disease from forming if taken daily. Still, a thousands of years old prevention has been proven helpful, namely the consumption of green tea. It is 100% safe and can be taken in any quantity.

Relief For Pain - 3 Osteopathic Secrets to Relieving Neck Muscle Spasms and Reducing Neck Pain

If your neck feels tense or painful, your neck muscles may be locked up in a spasm. A neck muscle spasm occurs when the cervical muscles are overstimulated. Essentially, they won't turn off.

A spasm can occur when a muscle is held in the same position for a long time. Or a muscle can be made to do repetitive movements. So, it is being trained to work extra hard at one activity.

The neck may be affected by the shoulder and upper back muscles, so it is best to treat all of the upper-body muscles if you want to take strain off the neck.

Natural treatment secrets based in osteopathy.

There are natural remedies that most doctors and health practitioners don't practice. But they can help you get instant relief, stop the muscle from its spasm, and prevent your neck from future spasms.

They originate in osteopathic medicine schools, and are also practiced by massage therapists, athletic trainers, and physical therapists. However, the training in these techniques is minimal, and the application is becoming a lost art. Who is practicing these simple, natural techniques in the wellness and medical professions? (Answer: Hardly anyone!)

* Positional Release- With the following positional release techniques, you will deactivate the muscle in spasm. It can be done with one of two ways:
Muscle Shortening- Identify the muscle which is in spasm. Then find its end points, where the muscle attaches to the bone. You will want to put the muscle on slack by bringing the two ends closer to each other. With your fingertips, press the muscle in toward itself from the ends. This signals the neuromuscular system to turn off the muscle.
This is a tricky skill with neck muscles because it is more difficult to find the ends of the muscles.
Repositioning- Another way to put the muscle on slack and send those deactivation signals is by gently moving other structures around the locked-up muscle. If you have a nasty 'crick in the neck', for example, one end of the affected muscle attaches to the shoulder blade. So, you can gently press the shoulder blade upward, toward the neck, to put it on slack.

Strain, Counter-Strain- This is the third technique that most health practitioners could be using to relieve spasms. When your neck is in spasm, you will apply a slight, gentle resistance force in the opposite direction of the spasm, and then stretch the muscle hn the direction that it was originally tight. It will stretch farther and loosen up.

If you practice these, you will eventually be able to use them very quickly to stop spasms. When you are proficient at them, you can also help others to relieve their pain and tension. Help yourself, and help others!

Of Bipolar Disorder, The Hippocampus, and The Exercise Fiend

My mother highly valued intelligence, and her way of putting down someone she saw as sub-par in the smarts department was saying, "He's no brain surgeon, I'll tell you that." But I, literally, am no brain surgeon, so to discuss this latest research I have to do one of those "let's start at the very beginning" Julie Andrews routines.

So, you've got a brain. So far, so good. And the brain has what is known as a limbic system. The limbic system is a set of structures that make up the inside of the cortex, which, in turn, is the tissue that is just outside [I know this is getting to be like "The House That Jack Built," but hang in there for just a few more moments] the cerebrum, which basically heads up your central nervous system. The limbic system is crucial in the experience of emotion--and memory, too, by the way.

Ok, one of those structures in the limbic system [and this is where I really wanted to get to] is known as the hippocampus. Essentially, it's part of the brain's mood center. And it's negatively impacted by stress, including the stress of bipolar episodes.

For years, brain autopsies on people with bipolar illness showed decreased density in the hippocampus. Additionally, a freshly published study entitled "Hippocampal Interneurons in Bipolar Disorder," published in the 2011 volume of the Archives of General Psychiatry compared brains of those with bipolar disorder to those of healthy control subjects. The abstract results are too wonderfully arcane to deprive you of, so here goes: "the bipolar disorder group showed reduced volume of the nonpyramidal cell layers, reduced somal volume in cornu ammonis sector 2/3, reduced number of somatostatin- and parvalbumin-positive neurons, and reduced messenger RNA levels for somatostatin, parvalbumin, and glutamic acid decarboxylase 1." Got it?

What they're really saying is that the hippocampus functions differently--and less well--in bipolar patients, partially due to reduced volume.

That being the case, it becomes of primary importance, if you're suffering from bipolar disorder, to take care of those hippocampal cells, and prevent whatever volume loss possible.

Despite our rather disheartening knowledge that there is brain atrophy in the bipolar nervous system, there is much cause for hope. A 2007 article showed that taking lithium increased volume in the paralimbic regions of the brain, and it has since been demonstrated that consistent treatment with adequate doses of antidepressants increases hippocampal volume, as well.

And, medication aside, we now get to return to one of my favorite topics, which is, as I've mentioned in other articles, exercise. Just to be clear--I firmly believe that bipolar disorder needs to be treated with a strict medicine regime, rigorously adhered to. I'm not a proponent of going all-natural, or organic, with such a serious illness.

However, in addition to whatever medicine your doctor has prescribed, exercise also holds much promise for not just slowing the shrinkage of the hippocampus cells-but actually reversing the process.

Numerous studies have found that 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week will slow hippocampus volume loss in the elderly, thus working against age-related memory loss. A research study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science entitled "Exercise Training Increases Size of Hippocampus and Improves Memory" found that the exercise impacted hippocampal volume so positively that it was the equivalent or reversing age-related volume loss by 1-2 years.

Schizophrenia is associated with hippocampal shrinkage to an even greater extent than bipolar disorder. Yet in a study of control-sample healthy men and men with schizophrenia entitled "Hippocampal Plasticity in Response to Exercise in Schizophrenia" in the February 2010 issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry, authors Frank-Gerald Pajonk et al found that cycling for 30 minutes 3 times per week increased hippocampal volume--for both groups, even the schizophrenics.
